E. Harris Pierce, M.D.

E.Harris Pierce, M.D. of Cleveland, passed away Thursday morning, November 29, 2018, at his residence. Born on December 3, 1924 in Monticello, Georgia to the late Clifford Edgar and Ruby Inez Faulkner Pierce, he was raised in Georgia before moving to Cleveland in 1958.Dr. Pierce was educated at Emory University School of Medicine which was interrupted by his service in World War II. He returned to Medical School at Emory and finished in 1949. Dr. Pierce then completed his surgical residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and was drafted back into the Army Medical Corps and served in Okinawa during the Korean Conflict. Dr. Pierce practiced as a General Surgeon from 1958 until his retirement in 2002. He was a member of the Bradley Medical Society, TMA AMA, SAGES, and was a charter member of a National and an International Fellowship of Bariatric Surgery. Dr Pierce was a longtime and faithful member of St Luke’s Episcopal Church where he served many years on the Vestry, and was a member of the Men’s Prayer Breakfast and Adult Bible Sunday School Class. Dr. Pierce also served as past President of Kiwanis and was instrumental in establishing Cleveland and Flag City, U.S.A. In addition to his parents, Dr. Pierce was preceded in death by his first wife, Laura Meadors Pierce. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Skidmore Abel Pierce; sons, Dr. Ed Pierce and wife Sally of Nashville and Dr Steve Pierce and wife Dr Carla McKeethren of Knoxville; daughter, Harriet Lewis and husband Chris of Brevard, North Carolina; Step-daughter Susan Abel Mueller and husband Fred of Calhoun; and Step-son, Burton Abel of Delano. Seventeen grandchildren and spouses and twelve great- grandchildren also survive.  Dr. Pierce bequeathed his body to the Emory University School of Medicine for scientific research.  A Memorial service will be held at 2p.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at St.Luke’s Episcopal Church with Father Joel Huffstetler officiating.  The family will receive friends from 12-2p.m. prior to the service in the Parish Hall.  In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund at St Luke’s Episcopal Church 320 Broad Street Cleveland, TN 37311   We invite you to send a message of comfort and view the family guestbook at www.serenityfunerals.com
