Sylvia R Howard Cannon, daughter of the late W.A. and Julia Alice (Martin) Howard, was born February 16, 1927, in Polk County, Tennessee. She attended the public schools of Cleveland and Bradley County. As a young woman she professed her faith in Jesus Christ. She was a faithful member of South Cleveland Church of God where she worked in the Sunday School for many years.
She was married to Herbert G. Cannon, Sr. in October of 1945. He preceded her in death in 2005.
She loved animals, reading, baking, flowers, the Atlanta Braves, crossword puzzles, and southern gospel music. She was a caring and generous Christian whose influence will remain in the lives of all who knew her, including the many children she cared for throughout her life. She quietly departed this life at the age of 89 on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at a local health care facility.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by eleven siblings; Ethel, Anna, Wilbur, Mabel, Gene, Dan, Martin, Traynor, Herman, Donald, and Jo, and daughter-in-law, Sheila Cannon.
She is survived by her three children; Herb Cannon, Jr (Hariett), Sherry Cannon West, Patty Cannon Storey (Doug), and son-in-law, Vernon West. She also leaves behind to cherish her memory, one brother, Walter Howard (Wanda); three grandchildren, Jesse “Bud” West (Sandy), Kerri West Benton (Ross), and Tim Storey (Heath), two step-grandchildren; Craig Wilson and Laura Wilson White (Adam), and foster grandson, Brent Holcomb. She also loved beyond words her great grandchildren; Blaze, Trace, Jessalee, Addison, and Montgomeree, and step great-grandchildren; Emma Jane, Caleb, Carter, Olivia Kate, Sam and Jack. They will never forget Mamaw. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as other extended family members and a host of friends.
The funeral will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2016, at Grissom Serenity Funeral Home with Pastor Kenneth Bowers and Pastor Edwin Lipsey officiating. Interment will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 17, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be; Ross Benton, Bud West, Tim Storey, Heath Rico, Rodney Dillard, Anthony Tucker, Brent Holcomb, and Blaze Benton.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
